Zune 3.1, new ZunePass and Common Posted on November 20th
By now you *should* know that Zune 3.1 was shipped. Download it now! Because we actually listen to our customers (yes we have more than 8) we released this .1 update to address the top issues and frustrations reported. That way everyone opening up a brand new Zune on Christmas will be good to go.
One of my favorite things about Zune is the ZunePass subscription service. You pay $15 / month and download and listen to as much music as you want. I have listened and enjoyed more music in the last couple years than I have in my entire life. It’s insane! Something new comes out and I just download it. If I get tired of it I delete it. Some people don’t like this model because they are stuck in the 90’s and have it in their head that they need to “own” their music. So they continue buying $10-$20 CDs or buying one off $1 tracks online. I ask why don’t you get a ZunePass or equivalent (like Rhapsody). The answers is always “I want to keep it forever” or “well if I stop paying monthly I can’t listen anymore right, that won’t work.” Do they have the same attitude with their cable provider? Do they get to own the tv they watch forvever? What happens when they stop paying $50 / month? IT’S THE SAME THING! Except music is much less expensive. So yeah, I pay $15 / month and listen to 5 times more new and old music than most people spending twice that… but they get to keep it…
ENTER THE NEW ZUNEPASS: Same great subscription. Same price. Download as much music as you want… but now you get to keep 10 MP3 tracks… FOREVER!
In addition, anyone who has actually used the Zune software and iTunes knows that we kick major ass and iTunes is complete crap. Even non-biased people who don’t work at Zune think that. :) Also, our Zune 120 and Zune 16 devices are arguably as good or better than the iPod Class and Nano devices. Sadly we don’t compete with the very sexy very cool iPod Touch…
…
In advertising news, Zune just started ads that star our software (that’s what I work on) instead of the device. It highlights our music discovery feature called MixView. The first ad stars Common… who I had the please of meeting:
Here is the new ad:
Enjoy!
Sean.
